REVA Plays Key Role in St. Kitts Rescue

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — REVA recently played a critical role in the rescue of an Indiana man who fell inside a dormant volcano in St. Kitts.

REVA Air Ambulance plays key role in rescue

REVA, North America’s largest fixed-wing jet air-ambulance service, evacuated the man to a Fort Lauderdale hospital after his wife rescued him and called for help.  The couple, Clay and Acaimie Chastain, were spending their honeymoon on the West Indies island. Clay Chastain suffered a fractured skull, cracked vertebra, loss of hearing in his right ear, and a severe concussion in the fall.  He is recovering at Broward Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale following REVA’s transport.

The drama unfolded in late July when the couple made the 2 ½-hour climb up the dormant volcano.  Clay Chastain decided to climb down to the crater lake. During the descent, he slipped and fell.

His wife told news outlets she heard what she thought was a branch snapping and a rock falling.  She said she sensed something “really bad had happened.”  She climbed down and first found his phone and bandana. Then she saw her husband.

When she reached him, he was bleeding from his nose and had an obvious head injury.  She told him they would have to somehow climb out of the crater.  The ascent took three hours before she finally could reach paramedics.

Immediately after initial contact with paramedics, International SOS, the world’s leading medical and security risk services company, was called upon to assist with medical transportation services and determined the fastest and most cost-effective medical evacuation for the hiker.

REVA, in close partnership with International SOS, rushed to action and transported the Chastains to the hospital.

“REVA was glad to help transport the injured man to a place where he could receive proper medical treatment and bring a satisfying conclusion to what could have been a disastrous incident,” said Shannon Schell, REVA’s CEO. “We’re gratified that he seems to be on the road to recovery, and we wish the newlyweds well.

“That REVA was called upon in such a circumstance once again demonstrated our ability to respond to an emergency situation quickly and efficiently. It’s part of what we do.”
