International Hospitals in the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean and are surrounded on three sides by the southern tip of Mexico, Cuba and Jamaica. They’re a British Overseas Territory with three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

These islands are well-known for their beautiful tropical beaches and incredible food. They make an amazing vacation destination — you can bask in the sun, frolic in the water and taste some delicious local foods. However, before your trip, you’ll want to understand your options should a medical situation arise during your vacation. So, what are the hospitals in the Cayman Islands like? Here’s what you need to know about health care in the Cayman Islands before you book your flight.

Health Care in the Cayman Islands

There are a few fully equipped hospitals in the Cayman Islands and many additional medical centers and facilities. For almost every possible health crisis, there is high-quality medical care available. And in many cases, medical procedures in the Cayman Islands are much more affordable than procedures in the United States. However, hospitals in the Cayman Islands typically won’t accept U.S. insurance unless you’ve paid for travel insurance that can cover medical costs.

You can also pay for medical procedures in the Caymans out of pocket with U.S. dollars. These limited financing options mean it’s incredibly important to have a plan and ensure you’re covered before heading to the Caymans on vacation. Another option is to request medical repatriation services if you want to receive care at home.

Health Insurance for International Patients

Before you travel out of the country, it’s a good idea to invest in travel health insurance. Check with your health insurance provider to see if they provide coverage for the Cayman Islands. If that area isn’t included in your policy, you can start investigating travel insurance options.

When planning travel insurance, don’t forget to consider the cost of emergency evacuation. In some cases, you might need transportation back to the U.S. for care. You should consider any adventure activities you’re planning to enjoy when choosing insurance — what could potentially happen, and are you covered for it?

By thinking through possible scenarios now, you can enjoy your trip without worry. The last thing you want to be thinking about on a tropical beach is whether you’re covered if an accident were to happen.

How Many Hospitals Are in the Cayman Islands?

During your Cayman Islands vacation, you’ll have access to three fully equipped hospitals. Two are privately owned and one is public, but all three are located on Grand Cayman, the largest island. There’s also a smaller public hospital located on Cayman Brac.

At first glance, the hospitals on the Cayman Islands may seem a bit confusing — that’s because many of them go by several names. Keep reading to determine what each hospital offers, where each is located and what they’re best known for.

Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI)

This hospital has Joint Commission International (JCI) Enterprise Accreditation, which means it’s been evaluated by a third party for patient safety and quality of care. HCCI has four locations and serves communities on both sides of Grand Cayman through these facilities:

  • East End Hospital
  • Camana Bay Clinic
  • Camana Bay Medical Center
  • Camana Bay Hospital

HCCI is equipped to perform complex operations and is widely considered one of the best medical facilities on the islands. It has a unique model that’s designed to offer high-quality care at more affordable prices.

Doctors Hospital (CTMH)

Formerly known as the Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital (CTMH), Doctors Hospital is another private facility located in George Town on Grand Cayman. This hospital offers a wide range of services, including MRIs, diagnostic imaging and pediatric care.

Doctors Hospital has been operating since 2000 and is recognized as a leading provider of high-quality private health care in the Caribbean. Services include cardiology, radiology, oncology and more.

George Town Hospital

The George Town Hospital is one of several operated by the Health Services Authority (HSA). It’s a public hospital located in George Town on Grand Cayman. This Cayman Islands hospital is fully equipped, with 127 beds and a wide range of services that include the following:

  • Critical care
  • Physiotherapy
  • Surgical services
  • Oncology
  • Forensics

This Grand Cayman hospital also offers specialized services such as cardiology, dermatology and pediatrics. They are also JCI-accredited. Other HSA-operated facilities can be found at these eight primary locations on all three islands:

  • Smith Road Medical Centre
  • Bay Town House
  • West Bay Health Centre
  • Little Cayman Clinic
  • Bodden Town Health Centre
  • North Side Health Centre
  • East End Health Centre
  • Faith Hospital Cayman Brac

Faith Hospital

If you’re looking for health care on Cayman Brac, you can find primary, secondary and emergency care at Faith Hospital. Like the island it’s situated on, this public hospital is much smaller than those on Grand Cayman. However, Faith Hospital is HSA-operated and can refer complicated cases to George Town Hospital when necessary.

Additional Medical Centers

There are several other medical clinics in the Cayman Islands if you’re looking for walk-in services or prescription-based services like diagnostic imaging. Baptist Health is a good example — they offer diagnostic imaging services on Grand Cayman with a doctor’s prescription.

If something truly serious has occurred, you may want to consider relocating to the United States. Emergency travel services can help you navigate the challenges of transportation so you or your loved one can receive care as quickly as possible.
